There are some pretty special waterfalls on the island. It takes a day to visit a waterfall, we get a driver set up who will take you there to enjoy, you can pack food and relax or hike into others and return later in day.

The Sumba Tribe, on the island of Sumba in Indonesia also known as the Marapu people, is an indigenous community. The tribe is known for their unique culture, traditional beliefs, and stunning handicrafts. They still practice ancient weaving and natural dying these beautiful pieces are used for wearing, sleeping and ceremony. They have been living on this island for thousands of years, and their culture is as rich as it is old.

The geneticists believe that they first inhabited the northern coast of Sumba Island during Neolithic times, around 4000 BC. The megalithic structures have been created since then until now by these people who lived in harmony with nature and their surroundings. You will feel mostly animism or the religion of nature; meaning that all of nature is spiritual and everything has a spirit to honor all of life. Marapu is a blend of animism and ancestor worship. They believe that the spirits of their ancestors continue to watch over them and play a role in their daily lives. The tribe has a rich oral tradition of storytelling, music, and dance, used during rituals and ceremonies.

Sandalwood Trade. Sumba Island was known as Sandalwood Island because of the abundance of sandalwood trees on the island. The trade in this precious wood flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries. Exporting horses was a major part of this activity, they were taken from Sumba by force or sold by their owners who could not afford to keep them anymore because they
had been forced into slavery themselves. Men and their horses symbolize the warrior spirit and are celebrated via Pasola yearly. The Pasola Festival features horsemen fighting with spears. This festival is in February and March. The schedule is determined by the priest, held on a good day to thank the ancestors for their lives and to ask for fertility of the land.
